World Series 2016 Cubs Win

Was that or was that not a great world series?  Some people are even calling it ‘epic’, especially the last couple of games.

It was definitely an early Christmas present for Cubs fans all over.  The Chicago Cubs were down 3 games to 1 with the Cleveland Indians only needing one game to take the series, and win the World Series for 2016.   But apparently it just wasn’t in the cards for Cleveland.

Here’s How the Chicago Cubs Won Game 7 and the World Series

www.nytimes.com/2016/11/02/sports/world-series

Christmas indeed came early again for the Cubs, with one win, then another win, and then it was down to each team having 3 wins each, 3 for the Indians and 3 for the Cubs. Who was going home the 2016 world champions and who was going home the losers?

Chicago Cubs fans from all over flocked to Chicago to be part of history, to be part of the celebration, just to say I was there!   Thousands of fans descended on Wrigley Field, home of

Cubs even with the Cubs actually playing the last two games played in the Progressive field, home of the Cleveland Indians.

An estimated five million Cubs fans made their way to Chicago on Friday to celebrate the winning of the World Series championship, the last time they won was 108 years ago.

The Cubs have appeared in a total of eleven World Series. The 1906Cubswon 116 games, finishing 116–36 and posting a modern-era record winning percentage of .763, before losing the World Series to the Chicago White Sox (“The Hitless Wonders”) by four games to two.

The Cubs won back-to-back World Series championships in 1907 and 1908, becoming the first major league team to play in three consecutive World Series, and the first to win it twice. Most recently, the Cubs won the 2016 National League Championship Series and 2016 World Series, which ended a 71-year National League pennant drought and a 108-year World Series

Championship drought, both of which are record droughts in Major League Baseball

The 108-year drought was also the longest such occurrence in all major North American sports. Since the start of divisional play in 1969, the Cubs have appeared in the postseason eight times through the 2016 season.

The Cubs were playing in their eleventh World Series and their first since 1945, and won their first championship since 1908. It was the Indians’ sixth appearance in the World Series and their first since 1997, with their last Series win in 1948. The two teams entered their matchup as the two franchises with the longest World Series title droughts, a combined 176 years without a championship. Cleveland manager Terry Francona, who had previously won Series titles with the Boston Red Sox in 2004 and 2007, fell short in his bid to become the third manager, after Casey Stengel and Joe Torre, to win his first three trips to the Series

The Cleveland Indians are an American professional baseball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Indians compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) Central division. Since 1994, they have played at Progressive Field. The team’s spring training facility is at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona.

Since their establishment as a major league franchise in 1901, the Indians have won two World Series championships: in 1920 and 1948, along with eight Central Division titles and six American League pennants. The Indians’ current World Series championship drought is the longest active drought, and through 2016 is the fifth-longest in baseball history.

The name “Indians” originated from a request by club owner Charles Somers to baseball writers to choose a new name to replace “Cleveland Naps” following the departure of Nap Lajoie after the 1914 season. The name referenced the nickname “Indians” that was applied to the Cleveland Spiders baseball club during the time when Louis Sockalexis, a Native American, played in Cleveland.[4] Common nicknames for the Indians include the “Tribe” and the “Wahoos”, the latter being a reference to their logo, Chief Wahoo, a controversial Native American caricature. The team’s mascot is named “Slider.”

The Cleveland Indians originated in Michigan in 1894 as the Grand Rapids Rustlers, a minor league team in the Western League. The team moved to Cleveland in 1900, changing its name to the Cleveland Lake Shores; the Western League itself changed its name to the American League (AL) while continuing its minor league status. One of the American League’s eight charter franchises, the major league incarnation of the club was founded in Cleveland in 1901. Originally called the Cleveland Bluebirds, the team played in League Park until moving permanently to Cleveland Stadium in 1946. The Cleveland Indians reached the World Series in 2016 and held a 3–1 lead against the Chicago Cubs, but they ultimately lost the series. At the end of the 2016 season, they had a regular season franchise record of 9,191–8,837 (.510).

Not only did the Chicago and Cleveland fans enjoy the World Series, but apparently so did a lot of sport fans.

World Series a boon for Fox with 40.5 million watching finale

http://www.walb.com/story/33661878/world-series-a-boon-for-fox-405-million-watching-finale

The 2016 World Series was the 112th edition of Major League Baseball‘s championship series, a best-of-seven playoff between the National League (NL) champion Chicago Cubs and the American League (AL) champion Cleveland Indians, the first meeting of those franchises in postseason history.

The Indians had home-field advantage because the AL had won the 2016 All-Star Game. The Cubs defeated the Indians in seven games, their first World Series victory in 108 years. They clinched the Series in Game 7 with an 8–7 win in extra innings, marking the fifth time that a Game 7 had gone past nine innings, and the first one to have a rain delay, which happened just as the tenth inning was about to start. It was only the sixth time in World Series history that a team came back from a deficit of three games to one to win a championship. This was the third consecutive year that the visiting team won the deciding game of the World Series.

The Chicago’s newspapers headlines were all about the end of their curse. What curse? The Chicago Cubs’ billy goat curse placed on the team back in 1945, by a fan not being allowed to bring his goat to the game even though he had brought the goat a ticket.

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/10/28/sport/chicago-cubs-billy-goat-curse/index.html

Believe it! Chicago Cubs ended the curse and win 2016 World Series

http://edition.cnn.com/2016/11/02/sport/world-series-game-7-chicago-cubs-cleveland-indians/index.html

Hopefully next year’s World Series will be as great as this one and it will include the Los Angeles Dodgers or The Los Angeles Angels.

Football 2016

What wrong with football

What’s going on with the game of football?  Is it just me or has the game become a bit boring this year?     Don’t get me wrong, I love ‘football’, but something is missing this season.  Could it be that the TV football fans are missing!

Sagging NFL TV ratings leave owners scrambling for answers

www.usatoday.com

It is the change in some of the rules?  This year there was a bunch of changes made.  It seems that the refs have been throwing the yellow flag on just about every play.   I know that the changes were made to protect the players.  But the changes are open to the interpretation of the rules by the refs and it seems that the refs have been a bit over the top.

It’s been so bad that not even the sports announcers know why the ‘yellow’ flag are tossed onto the field of play.  You have to wonder that if the announcers are struggling with the call along with the players and their coaches; how the fans are suppose to know what’s going on.

ESPN’s Sean McDonough Is The Bravest Man In Broadcasting For Ripping NFL Ratings And Officiating:

www.forbes.com

The one new rule that is really bugging me is the ‘taunting rule’.   Come on, taunting is what football is all about.  Catching the uncatchable pass, stacking the quarter back, making the touchdown and doing you thing in the end zone is the stuff the fans eat up.  We love it!  And instead on teaching the other guy, the one being taunted not to over react, they punish the winner.   It does seem to take all of the fun out watching football.

Baseball still allows taunting and so does basketball, again makes you wonder why football players aren’t being allowed to enjoy their ‘special’ moment in the sun.

Perhaps the problem in the amount of days that football is now being played.  You have college football on Friday and Saturday for the most part, then the NFL on Sunday, Monday and now on Thursday, that’s a lot of football.

NBC’s ‘Sunday Night Football’ has lowest ratings since 2011

www.thetrucker.com

Perhaps it just comes down to the quality of the games.  When you are getting blowout games in the NFL, you have to ask why.  Why are so many teams not playing up to the expectation of the team’s owners and their fans?

Are the teams being hampered by the excessive amount of injuries that have racked the NFL this year and if so, why are there so many injuries?  I don’t remember a time before this year that so many players were injured before the season even started.

Impotence is something which makes the erections not so firm and the ones cialis levitra generico that do not stay for a longer duration of time. Why hamstring injuries are so common in NFL players, during preseason training

www.si.com

There is one additional reason, at least one that the NFL is blaming for the low TV ratings.   They are claiming that Fans are watching fewer NFL games due to protests by several players during the National Anthem which was started by Colin Kaepernick as the primary reason.

sports.yahoo.com

The fact is that TV ratings are down for football this year no matter what the reasons are. However, the number of people playing Fantasy Football has only slightly fattened.  That should make the NFL wonder why!

Also more women are watching football and the sales of women’s NFL sport attire is on the rise, which does seem support that, but fewer fans are actually watching football on their TV’s.

What should be a main concern to the NFL is that there is a whole lot less young adults watching football.  There are a few out there, but with social media, they are not confined to just their TV sets to watch football, they can peak at the games on their cell phones or Ipads while still enjoying a day out with friends and family.

Young adults are not totally abandoning the NFL; they are the reason for Fantasy Football.  But even Fantasy Football has seen a flattening out of participants this year,

Study: Growth Of Fantasy Sports Participation Flattens Out, Little Growth For DFS

www.legalsportsreport.com

With TV ratings down, advertisers will definitely want to roll back the hefty prices being paid to the NFL and the team’s owners.   The NFL and the team’s owners will probably have to play along with the TV sponsors and then find other means to make up the potential loss in income.   Raising ticket prices is one way, but ticket prices are at an all time record high in some areas already.

NFL ratings plunge could spell doom for traditional TV.

www.washingtonpost.com

It will be interested to see how the NFL will adjust to this.  What changes will they come up with for the NFL season for next year?  There has even been talk about re-aligning the divisions that the teams are in.  They hope that this would help stimulate better competition between teams and thus gain new fans to the game of football.  There is also small talk about less games and a shorter season, then again there is also talk about adding more teams, which could mean more games and a longer season. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

sports October 2016

The month of October is one of the few months of the year that just about every kind of sports is available to watch. October is filled with a ton of sports action.

It starts off with the closing of the regular MLB season, then the wild card playoffs, ending with the World Series, last year the Kansas City Royal won the World Series, who will it be this year is anyone guess. There are quite a few baseball fans that are hoping for a repeat of Kansas City Royal’s winning the World Series. Of course I will be rooting for the Dodgers, it will be a lon shot but it could happen.

By the way, the Dodgers have already won their division, now we just have to wait and see if the Dodgers can make t pass the first round of the playoffs this year, it would definitely be a long shot, but it would be nice to see a National league team win, (except for the San Francisco Giants, of course).

MLB

October also saw the retirement of one of the most loved baseball broadcasters, Mr. Vin Scully. After 67 years of calling the Dodger games, he has called it quits. During the last Dodger home game which was played on September 25, the Dodgers and their fans played tribute to Scully. It was truly amazing to watch.

washingtonpost

We also have the continuation of the NFL Football, which just started a few weeks ago, already there are more than a few upsets, but what I have noticed is the overwhelming amount of injuries by the players this year. I thought last year was bad, but this year is even worse.

Someone really needs to look into it, is it due to the shorter ‘boot camp’, or the earlier televised ‘preseason’ games, or just bad luck? Whatever the reason, it is really running havoc with Fantasy Football.

Could it be just be due to the fact that professional football is now being played on Thursday, Sunday and Monday now, maybe not enough down time between games for the players to rest?

www.NFL.com

By the way, the new LA Rams have arrived and the Los Angeles fans have more than exceeded the expected increase in cash flow to the Rams’ owner and the City of LA. Even the price of just parking your car for the game will probably go down in

There is also the continuation of college football. It is always fun to watch college football; these players are giving their all for their school, and perhaps a slight chance of making to the NLF. The famous UCLA and USA game will be held at the Rose Bowl Saturday 19th of November, which of course, will be a sellout.

For what it’s worth, both USC and UCLA have not started out as winning teams, personally I blame the coaches, both teams have the talent and should be a whole lot better than what we have seen so far, but the selections of plays being called by the coaches do not make the best use of the talent available. Both teams need to go back to the drawing board and either hire a new head coach or at least a new offensive coach.

If you are not a fan of baseball or football, perhaps you are a fan of soccer and you are in luck because our LA Galaxy Soccer team is winding down their 2016 season with just a few games left. Then it’s off to the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers season is also starting this month. Good news for Lakers fans the opening game of the 2016/2017 season is Thursday Oct 13 7:30 pm with the Lakers playing the Sacramento Kings. Although a lot of Kobe fans were relented to see him retire, fortunately this did setup the Lakers to be able to do a whole lot of trading up during the off season. I think the Lakers will surprise more than a few people this season and be a real contender.

The Los Angeles Clippers will also be back. Starting with Thursday Oct 27 7:30 pm which is the opening game of the 2016/2017 NBA Basketball season for the LA Clippers playing the Portland Trail Blazers

Now, if you are thinking, ‘that yes’ there is a lot of sports going on in the month of October,
I haven’t even mentioned hockey yet. The NHL starts its season in October almost the same time as basketball.

We are so fortunate to have not just one but two hockey teams here is Southern CA and whether you are a Kings fan or a Ducks fan, doesn’t really matter, just like if you prefer the LA Angels or the LA Dodgers, doesn’t matter, you want both teams to do well at least until they play each other.

Wednesday Oct 12 7:30 pm is the opening game of the NHL Hockey season for the LA Kings with them playing the San Jose Sharks.

and on Thursday Oct 13 5:30 pm is the opening game of the NHL Hockey season for the Anaheim Ducks playing the Dallas Stars.

October is a great month to be a sports fan, there is such a wide assortment of sporting events. It’s also the end of summer with the weather cooling off, the leaves on the trees changing, and the days are getting shorter. It’s a great time to get off the sofa and take that long walk between watching all the games on TV.

Sports May 2016

Sports Blog – May 2016

sports May 2016

Let talk sports for May

Sports May 2016, as I tried gathering my thoughts as to what my main topic would be for this month’s sports blog, I did a little remising of my past blogs for the month of May. I did one a few years ago on Little league baseball, or how about the one on the fall of the LA Lakers, which to this day they have not yet recovered and the rise of the LA Clippers. The Clippers have made the playoffs again this year and are heavily favored.

www.nba.com/clippers

I could write a whole blog on the many upsets that occurred during this year’s ‘March Madness. What a tournament that was. My bracket was so destroyed by the 3rd round, I just had to give up and throw in the towel, as did many of my friends and family members. I even had the nerve to pick Kansas winning the whole thing, like I said, ‘bracket destroyed’!

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/cp/sports/2016-ncaa-tournament
I was even leaning toward doing this month’s blog on Baseball and my two favorite teams, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, but already did that last month. Besides we are only a month into the season, plenty of months leave to tackle that topic again.

However, I do have a major beef, with all the money the Dodgers have spend on pitchers and the Dodgers have a ton of them to choose from on their roster, why do they keep using the same ineffective relieve pitchers, day after day after day! I know it’s still early in the season and maybe they are hoping for some improvement, but most fans, including me would rather lose a game with a new relieve pitcher than keep losing with the same ones over and over again!

www.Dodgers.com

So, I guess I am left with either the NBA playoffs or the NHL playoffs, or better yet Kobe Bryant.

It’s hard to believe that Kobe will not be back next year and it’s unfortunate that the LA Lakers are still ‘bottom feeding’ in the rankings for 2016. I think this makes either the third or fourth year in a row that they didn’t even make the playoffs, let alone come in dead last.

Kobe Bryant Retires Tonight

And even through this was Kobe last year as a Laker, the Lakers did not make the playoffs, however, he did manage to go out in style, ‘Kobe style’ that is. His last game as a LA Laker, he scored a record high of 60 points. That in its self was totally amazing!

There was also Adam LaRoche, of the White Sox, who decided to throw in the towel when he could no longer bring his son to work and hang out in the dugout.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/no-one-is-wrong-about-adam-laroche/
However, the retirement of Vin Scully is the one that personally I will feel the most. I have been a Dodger fan for many, many years and one of the reasons I am a true blue fan is the voice of the Dodgers, Scully! It didn’t seem to hurt as much somehow that the Dodgers lost, he always had a way of letting the fans know that it was only a game, and there is always another game right around the corner.

http://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Dodgers-Scully-says-he-s-retiring-after-2016-6473854.php
I also loved the baseball stories and yet never missed a pitch or a hit. Besides all the baseball stories came the personal ones, not about him, but about our players, making them just a tad more human to us, the fans. He had a way of making it look and sound so easy and yet personally I don’t think there is anyone that does it better.

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/146129476/vin-scully-announces-2016-will-be-last-season
I am looking forward to continue watching Dodger baseball as the season continues, even though I am definitely not looking forward to this being Scully’s last season as the one and only Dodger announcer.

http://www.si.com/more-sports/2016/04/17/media-circus-vin-scully-world-series-nba-finale-ratings

One last comment regarding Vin Scully, there is a push for Vin to one of the baseball announcers for the 2016 World Series game. This would be a great way for Scully to end his career. Hopefully he will get enough support from MLB to make this happen.

College Bowl Games

To Many College Bowl Games?

As I started writing this blog I realize that there were still a few college bowl games left.

However, this year there was over forty college bowl games, that was a bit much, don’t you think?

To Many College Bowl games Yes or NO

To Many College Bowl games Yes or NO

http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/bowl/schedule

I tried to have the same amount of zest for each game, but it was hard. UCLA looked as bad in their bowl game as they did when they played USC. Air Force didn’t look much better playing CA-Berkeley. Or how bad was it watching Boise State play Northern Illinois at the Poinsettia Bowl on December 23, the final score was Boise 55 and Northern Illinois 17.

There were also several games that were very good and even a couple that were upsets, such as Houston upsets Florida State 38-24 in Peach Bowl.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/houston-upsets-florida-state-38-24-in-peach-bowl-212942310.htm
Or how about the Alamo Bowl , with TCU, Horned Frogs playing the Oregon Ducks, it was like watch two different games with the first half being won by the Ducks and the second half being won by the Horned Toads.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2604414-valero-alamo-bowl-2016-game-grades-analysis-for-oregon-vs-tcul
Many sports announcers have made comments about how boring this year’s bowl games were.
They blamed it on the pairing up of the teams, the amount of bowl games and the TV schedule of several games being played on New Year’s Eve.

It has been said that only Alabama-Clemson can save college football’s worst bowl season.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/only-alabama-clemson-can-save-college-football-s-worst-bowl-season-073817921.html

I understand the need for college football bowl games; I know it’s all about the money that they generate for the schools. Most of it coming from TV sponsors, but how many of these forty plus bowl games were actually worth watching? I tried to watch as many of these games as possible, but several actually put me to sleep.
Try a chiropractor’s office directory delivery overnight viagra for convenience. Men suffering from frequent PE also suffer from fatigue, weak erection, low sperm count, poor stamina, and low energy. best buy on cialis This medication with the sildenafil pills viagra canada citrate ingredient proffers an effective treatment of men’s erection problem.
The money that these bowl games generate go toward school scholarships and help support many of the other sport activities that college offer, but don’t bring in the necessary money to support them.
There is another reason that the college bowl games are important, at least to several of the senior football players, and that is to give them one last chance to show off their football skills to the NFL, thus improving their chances of entering the NFL draft.

One of the first of these senior players is the CA-Berkeley Quarterback, Jared Goff announcing he’s entering the NFL draft. Believe me, by the end of January or February the list will be long.
Unfortunately for most college football players, the majority of them will never play pro-ball.

Maybe the forces, that not only rank the college football teams during the year, but also select
what teams goes to what bowls can figure out a way to do a better job at lining up what school plays what school. This past bowl season was definitely not the best college has to offer and hopefully the selection committee will learn from their past mistakes.

Baseball 2015 All Star Game

Baseball 2015 All Star Game. The 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game

Baseball The All America Game

Baseball The All America Game

The 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was the 86th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
The game was hosted by the Cincinnati Reds and played at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday, July 14 and of course it was televised nationally on Fox.

The American League All-Stars defeated the National League All-Stars by a score of 6–3. It seems that the National League struggled yet again.

The host city was announced back on January 21, 2013, by MLB Commissioner Bud Selig. This will be the first time the city of Cincinnati has hosted the All-Star Game since the 1988 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was played at Riverfront Stadium.

There was a huge amount of hype on various TV sports channels as well as the local TV news stations. There were lots of rumors and gossip.

One of the rumors was that after being banned for LIFE for gambling, Pete Rose was going to show up. Pete Rose played 15 seasons for the Reds and was a part of the Big Red Machine, and was banned permanently from the MLB for baseball betting.

Bud Selig announced that Rose would not be prohibited from participating in this years All-Star Game ceremonies. And he did!

Pete Rose came home for the All-Star Game and made a rare on-field appearance in the place where he’s still treated like a king.

http://www.10tv.com/content/stories/2015/07/15/pete-rose-mlb-all-star-game.html

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/pete-rose-allowed-to-participate-in-all-star-game–mlb-commish-says-184711639.html

Another rumor until back in May 12, 2015 the Reds announced that Todd Frazier would serve as the 2015 All-Star Game spokesperson However, the biggest rumor, then gossip, then fact was the balloting problems that showed up and took center stage.

Balloting for the 2015 All-Star Game starters began online April 23 and ended on July 2. The top vote-getters at each position (including the designated hitter for the American League) and the top three among the outfielders, were named the starters for their respective leagues. The results were then announced on July 5.

A record 620 million votes were cast, surpassing the record of 391 million votes in 2012. Josh Donaldson was the leading vote-getter with 14,090,188 votes, breaking the record that Josh Hamilton set in 2012 with 11,073,744 votes. Bryce Harper set a new NL record for votes this year with 13,864,950 votes.

Which all sounds great, but it didn’t start out that way, after a few weeks it became apparent that ‘online’ voting system might have a few flaws in the system and due to these several flaws, for a few weeks the Kansas City Royals had 5 or more players playing in the All Star Game.

This cause a whole lot of uproar and a whole lot of sports ‘people’ wanting and demanding changes!

http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2015/6/19/8811347/mlb-all-star-game-royals-votes

There were so many people insisting on a recount and demanding immediate changes that the MLB Commissioner had to step in. The Immediate outcome was the chances of seeing Omar Infante suit up for the American League All-Star squad were getting slimmer by the hour when just a few days from the All-Star game, MLB Advanced Media CEO Bob Bowman revealed in an interview with Jeff Passan that between 60-65 million ballots have been disqualified for the upcoming All-Star Game.

The disqualified votes come after Royals fans (and at least some National League fans looking to create chaos) came out in even greater unison behind 2014 World Series runner-up after initial results gave those players a sizable lead, putting a total of eight Kansas City players in line to start for the AL.

While 60 million votes sounds like a sizable chunk of the 300-some million ballots that have been collected so far, Bowman insisted that the 20 percent cut was on par with results from previous seasons.

As of now a single online voter has a total 35 times to vote for either a certain player or players.

In the past, long before the internet, votes were made at the games by the people actually attending the game. The more games you went to, the more chances you had to vote.

Now in comes the internet and with it the opportunity to vote online, thus opening the process to being manipulated by a small group of computer experts, voting over and over again using different email addresses or even going as far as using different IPO addresses.

Lots of true baseball fans were concerned that once again, the true spirit of baseball had once again been trampled on.

These ‘sport enthusiasts’ would like for baseball to take a few steps backwards, with less dependence on the votes placed on the internet and more votes coming in from the fans that actually attended the game.

Also more weight giving the other baseball players votes, along with the baseball owners, and managers votes.

Another change being pushed is to remove the ‘win at all cost’ incentive placed on the game, with the winner of the All Star Game being given the ‘Home Field Advantage’ at the next World Series game.

This Year the American League beat the National League 6-3 to secure home-field advantage in the World Series for the third straight time and 10th in 13 years.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/tuesdays-sports-brief-064722110–mlb.html;_ylt=AwrXgiLmjLVVomkAxCFNbK5_;_ylu=X3oDMTByNDN1aDMxBGNvbG8DZ3ExBHBvcwM1BHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw–

Overall, good did triumph over evil and the game was played with a good mix of players from a wide variety of team both for the American League and the National League.

Now that the 2015 All Star Game is one for the books, and baseball is already working on the completing the second half of the season, there were some winners and some losers, such as; Pete Rose – winner, Mike Trout- winner and Kershaw-loser and Bruce Harper- loser.

MLB will reportedly change All-Star Game hosting criteria, this announcement came after the MLB had announced that San Diego will host the 2016 All Star Game.

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/108620194/mlb-will-reportedly-change-all-star-game-hosting-criteria

No matter if you are a fan of the ‘All-Star’ games or not, almost every sport has one. Baseball is just one of the few that have it half-way through the season.

The ‘All Star Break’ does gives everyone a much needed break, it gives time for the players to heal a little, rest a little and for GM along with the managers to get ready for the trade deadlines that occur right after the all-star break.

The future of the All Star game, just like everything else on TV, it will come down to not what’s best for baseball, but what is best for the ratings.

The Pressure On, For Charger New Stadium

San Diego is about to get hosed
by the Chargers and the NFL

Hi Sport fans, especially those of us who follow the ups and downs of the National Football League.

It concerns not only the loyal fans of the San Diego Chargers, but what can happen when
The NFL is allowed to pressure Cities to doing what they are ‘asked’ to do by the NFL.

Here’s what a waste of $1.1 billion looks like.

San Diego, please don’t be as dumb as this Chargers stadium plan is making you look.

Your tax-free stadium is going to end up with ‘public money’ one way or another.

Years of griping about Qualcomm Stadium from the Spanos family of owners and some screw-turning from the NFL, which refused to award San Diego another Super Bowl until the Chargers updated their 1967-vintage facility, had previously yielded only chuckles from San Diego. A string of mayors and city councils refused to pay a dime of public money toward a new facility while a family with 10 figures of net worth held its hand out.

However, the Spanos clan did the unthinkable and partnered with the Chargers’ AFC West rival Oakland Raiders on a proposed $1.7 billion facility in Carson, Calif., that was approved in April. That’s when San Diego began losing its nerve. Rushed by St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke’s own Los Angeles stadium proposal and pressured by NFL representatives to get an offer on the table, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and his stadium planning committee announced plans for a $1.1 billion stadium that “won’t raise taxes.” San Diego, please read the fine print on this plan.

While the Los Angeles Times pulled out the pom-poms and swiped some choreography from Bring It On for its enthusiastic A-N-N-O-U-N-C-E-M-E-N-T of the new stadium plan, it glossed over the fact that the Chargers and the NFL would be responsible for only $500 million of those costs. Oh, and the Chargers still feel they’re “being asked to contribute far more than other NFL teams have been required to pay when their stadiums were built.” Meanwhile, the project requires $173 million in bonds, $121 million from San Diego, $121 million from San Diego County, an estimated $100 million from ticket surcharges and seat licenses, and the city’s $225 million sale of the Qualcomm Stadium site to a developer.

Though the proposed plan asks the Chargers to pay $1 million per game in rent ($8 million per year, more during playoff years), the “won’t raise taxes” portion of this deal is very much in doubt. Just ask the good people of Indianapolis and Indiana. They forked over 86% of the $720 million cost of the Colts’ Lucas Oil Stadium before it opened in 2008 and borrowed money from Goldman Sachs GS, +1.39% for a bond sale to cover the cost and minimize the tax burden. However, as Bloomberg discovered, the group in charge of those bonds just paid Goldman $71 million to get out of that bond deal after an interest-rate-swap scheme went sour. As a result, hotel, restaurant and rental-car taxes that were already being used to pay stadium costs had to be increased.

NFL stadiums have soaked up an average of $250 million in public funding apiece since the mid-1990s. Harvard University urban planning professor Judith Grant Long notes that municipal or state land, lost property taxes from that land, infrastructure and annual maintenance all tack on about 25% to the cost of an NFL facility. The least the NFL can do is offer the public a say in that spending, but the NFL has rammed Los Angeles stadiums through local government without a vote and is squeezing politicians in St. Louis, Oakland and San Diego to avoid a public vote on tax money for stadiums, citing expediency.

There is no way San Diego should let this go down without a vote. Faulconer has promised one for November and a two-thirds vote would be required for approval. The NFL, knowing it doesn’t have the votes for this and that few taxpayers would agree to such a lopsided deal, sent Executive VP Eric Grubman to San Diego to declare the vote “risky.”

Take that risk. It’s your tax money and your city, San Diego. While folks in Seattle know that a public vote doesn’t always mean public money won’t go into a stadium, they also know it’s about the best tool the taxpayer has to negotiate terms. If the fourth estate would rather play cheerleader than look out for your interest, look out for you own and force a vote. If the NFL and the Spanos clan don’t like it, they know where I-5 is. Good luck getting to L.A. before the Rams and Raiders, though.

Supporting Our Local Southern California Sports!

Apparently there doesn’t seem to be enough room in dodger fan’s hearts for both the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers. I don’t know why either.

Article by By Eric Freeman

I have been a Laker fan since before Magic Johnson played for them instead of being a part owner of the Dodgers. For the most part, the Lakers have been a great team winning the NB Championships year after year. However, for the last couple of years there have been problems with the chemistry between players, the age of several of the players and the injuries. And although I know that it is just a matter of time that the LA Lakers will once again become the first class team that they once were.

http://www.nba.com/lakers/

The fact that I am a LA Laker fan doesn’t stop me from cheering for the Clippers, after all, they are a LA Team. I am still a Laker fan, but I am also a fan of LA Sports.

Any time a team from Southern California makes it to the playoff games, as a whole, we are better for it. Shouldn’t matter what LA Basketball team makes it to the playoffs, as long as someone does, I would prefer the Lakers, but will root for the Clippers. Why? Simple, it adds money to our local economy and it’s another notch in the belt for LA Sports.

Downtown business, whether it is hotels, motels, restaurants, or local stores, they all benefit. It also gives us, the Los Angeles Fan base, a reason to gloat.

You hear it all the time about how Southern CA and in peculiar, Los Angeles, is not into sports, how we don’t support our local teams. You especially hear this from the NFL, they love to use that as an excuse as to why LA doesn’t have or need a Football team.

The politics behind why Los Angeles doesn’t have an NFL team

The only time a Laker Fan should be rooting against the Clippers is when the Clipper are playing the Lakers or they are both tied for first place and the Lakers need a win.

www.NBA/clippers

It is sort of the same thing that happens between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

I am a true Dodger fan, in other words, I ‘bleed blue’. However, I will root for the Angels, except when they are actually playing the Dodgers. I will especially root for the Angels when they are playing a ‘National Team’ and from the same division as the Dodgers. Example is when the Angels play the D-backs or the Giants.

How about all the LA King fans that openly support the Anaheim Ducks when the Ducks instead of the LA Kings make the playoffs, as in this year! Would they prefer to be rooting for the LA Kings, YES! But, still better to have a Southern CA team in the playoffs than none! Go Ducks! Again this is good for Southern CA
Sports, there are a whole lot of hockey fans up north and on the east coast that didn’t even know we had a hockey team, much less two and that the LA Kings won the Stanley Cup last year and the Ducks just missed the Stanley Cup Finals by a single loss.

http://ducks.nhl.com/

What it comes down to is simple, as a Southern CA sports fan, we need to be there for all our teams regardless of what our favorites are.

Sports April 2015, a month to remember

April was a fun month for us sports fans! No matter what sports who follow, there was something going on.

April was the beginning of professional baseball, whether you are a Dodger fan or an Angel fan, it was great just to have the season start again.

www.Dodger.com

www.LAAngels.com

However there is still a dark side to the LA Dodgers; close to 70% of the market still is unable to see the Dodgers play and Vin Scully the game due to ‘Time Warner’ not making the games available outside their own customers.

Dodgers fans to remain in the dark as TV deal reportedly falls through!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/dodgers-fans-to-remain-in-the-dark-as-tv-deal-reportedly-falls-through-143820583.html

No matter who or who is not watching them, the Dodgers are off to a good start. In my opinion, several of their new players, such as Pederson, Anderson and Rollins are a real fine. However I do think that the Dodgers still need a great closer, especially with Jansen still out at least until mid-month. It’s not bad and it could be worse!

April was also the end of a very exciting men’s college basketball ‘March Madness’. We saw the end of Kentucky run for a perfect season with their loss to Wisconsin. Then it was on to watching Wisconsin loss to Duke in the finals. It was indeed a thriller!

Duke Beats Wisconsin 68-63 To Win 2015 NCAA Tournament

Just as we got use to the fact that college basketball was done for the season, on comes the NBA playoffs. It was a bit concerning that once again the LA Lakers did not make the playoffs, however, the LA Clippers did. Go Clippers!

Lakers eliminated from playoffs, team’s earliest elimination in 54 years.

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/11/lakers-eliminated-from-playoffs-teams-earliest-elimination-in-54-years/

You also have the NHL playoffs being played during the month of April. The Anaheim Ducks are in the playoffs, but sadly the LA Kings managed to miss the playoffs.

It was quite a shock for LA King fans when after wining last year’s Stanley Cup, they failed to even make the playoff this year. However, that means that us, the fans that were rooting for the Kings, will now turn our support to the Anaheim Ducks, after all, it would still be a Southern CA team winning the Stanley Cup!

It is a good thing is that Southern California has at least two teams for most sports, your team does make the playoffs, chances are the other team might. Such as, Lakers out, Clippers in, Kings out, Ducks in, Dodgers in, Angels out, (or the other way around, to early to tell yet).

Even USC or UCLA fans will route for the other team if their team doesn’t make it to the playoffs. Still beats an ‘outsider winning’. It’s always better for Southern CA when one of our local teams win!

Too bad the same can’t be said for professional football, LA still has no team! But that’s a whole other topic for another blog.

April is also important for the NFL. Most teams are in the hunt for new players, trading old ones, gaining new ones, even restructuring old contracts and make new ones.

There has even been a few surprises, such as the Washington Redskins deciding to pull the ‘franchise tag’ for RG3, when everyone else thought the owner would use the opportunity to trade him.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/why-in-the-world-would-redskins-pick-up-rgiii-s-option–let-s-explore-151647567.html

The NFL also releases it’s fall schedule in April. LA Fans can start marking their calendars, booking their air flights, hotels and whatever they will need in order to attend either San Diego Charger or the Oakland Raiders games.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/2015-nfl-schedule–league-releases-the-full-regular-season-slate-000758569.html

This year, some team are really going outside the box in their attempt to gain depth in their rotations, even to the extent of the Eagles hiring Tim Tebow as their 4th Quarterback, A bit of an overkill, having 4 QB, but who knows. . .

April also brings us freaking weather in which baseball players have to deal with, we are all use to a bit of rain, in which we deal with rain delays, but how often do we see snow falling dealing a National Baseball Game, well it happened.

All in All, April was a great month for being a Sports Fan, can’t wait to see what May will bring!

End of Season, Dodgers Cleaning House

For One Thing Dodgers are cleaning house

End of Baseball SeasonIn the world of sports at the end of the season is all about who’s getting Trading or Chopped?

Dodgers Cleaning House, will it help?

No matter what the sport, at the end of every individual sport season everyone associated with that sport ends up not knowing if they will keep their job.

This is especially true when there was a high expectation for a team ‘to go all the way’ and for whatever reason they don’t.

This was true with the Los Angeles Lakers last season when not only was Paul Gasol traded to the Bull, but even their coach Mike D’Antoni was replaced by Byron Scott.

www.NBA.com/lakers

Now it’s the MLB’s turn. There are many baseball teams that were expected to a whole all better than what they actually did. It didn’t seem to matter how much money the owners of the teams spend on players, they did not live up to huge price tags.

So, who will get the axe? Who will be sent back to AAA baseball and who will get traded? No one knows for sure, but the rumors are flying all over the sports world.

The Dodgers have already made the news with the hiring of a new GM, Andrew Friedman, and the former GM of the Tampa Bay Rays. What happen to Colletti, you ask? Well the owners actually kept Colletti as a senior advisor.

http://nypost.com/2014/10/14/how-dodgers-swiping-the-rays-gm-shakes-up-baseball-world/

http://m.dodgers.mlb.com/news/article/98487820/andrew-friedman-named-dodgers-president-of-baseball-operations-colletti-becomes-advisor

broom 300But I don’t think the Dodgers are done with cleaning house, high priced players that don’t earn their pay will need to either be traded or somehow, someway show the Dodger owners that they are worth the investment.

Moreover, when this particular valve dysfunctions, it opens at inappropriate times due to which the viagra cialis on line stomach acids enters the food pipe.
However, it just isn’t the Dodgers, how about the Los Angeles Angels, the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Socks, the Atlanta Braves, and all teams that on paper should be playing in the World Series.

www.MLB.com

This year the Oakland Raiders did not even wait until the end of their season to try and change from a losing season by firing their coach Dennis Allen, after only 5 weeks into their season. Then the owner hires Tony Sparano as their interim coach.

http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2014/10/07/raiders-return-to-work-under-new-coach/

But there is still the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New York Jets, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the St. Louis Rams, each and every one of these teams have a losing season so far this year! Their owners are already looking at how to get their
‘product’ producing and become winning teams. New Managers, coaches, quarterbacks, whatever it will take.

www.NFL.com

Then you have the owner of the Washington Redskins. They have already replaced their coach, traded their under-producing players and there are still facing a losing season.

http://www.nfl.com/teams/profile?team=WAS

What it comes down to is no matter how good you are in you particular sport, have a bad year and you could end of being traded or become a ‘free agent’

It sometimes doesn’t even matter that you played you very best and the term as a whole wasn’t having a good year, in the eyes of the owner, someone will take the
Fall, to become the scapegoat so to speak.
