sports October 2016

The month of October is one of the few months of the year that just about every kind of sports is available to watch. October is filled with a ton of sports action.

It starts off with the closing of the regular MLB season, then the wild card playoffs, ending with the World Series, last year the Kansas City Royal won the World Series, who will it be this year is anyone guess. There are quite a few baseball fans that are hoping for a repeat of Kansas City Royal’s winning the World Series. Of course I will be rooting for the Dodgers, it will be a lon shot but it could happen.

By the way, the Dodgers have already won their division, now we just have to wait and see if the Dodgers can make t pass the first round of the playoffs this year, it would definitely be a long shot, but it would be nice to see a National league team win, (except for the San Francisco Giants, of course).

MLB

October also saw the retirement of one of the most loved baseball broadcasters, Mr. Vin Scully. After 67 years of calling the Dodger games, he has called it quits. During the last Dodger home game which was played on September 25, the Dodgers and their fans played tribute to Scully. It was truly amazing to watch.

We also have the continuation of the NFL Football, which just started a few weeks ago, already there are more than a few upsets, but what I have noticed is the overwhelming amount of injuries by the players this year. I thought last year was bad, but this year is even worse.

Someone really needs to look into it, is it due to the shorter ‘boot camp’, or the earlier televised ‘preseason’ games, or just bad luck? Whatever the reason, it is really running havoc with Fantasy Football.

Could it be just be due to the fact that professional football is now being played on Thursday, Sunday and Monday now, maybe not enough down time between games for the players to rest?

www.NFL.com

By the way, the new LA Rams have arrived and the Los Angeles fans have more than exceeded the expected increase in cash flow to the Rams’ owner and the City of LA. Even the price of just parking your car for the game will probably go down in

There is also the continuation of college football. It is always fun to watch college football; these players are giving their all for their school, and perhaps a slight chance of making to the NLF. The famous UCLA and USA game will be held at the Rose Bowl Saturday 19th of November, which of course, will be a sellout.

For what it’s worth, both USC and UCLA have not started out as winning teams, personally I blame the coaches, both teams have the talent and should be a whole lot better than what we have seen so far, but the selections of plays being called by the coaches do not make the best use of the talent available. Both teams need to go back to the drawing board and either hire a new head coach or at least a new offensive coach.

If you are not a fan of baseball or football, perhaps you are a fan of soccer and you are in luck because our LA Galaxy Soccer team is winding down their 2016 season with just a few games left. Then it’s off to the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers season is also starting this month. Good news for Lakers fans the opening game of the 2016/2017 season is Thursday Oct 13 7:30 pm with the Lakers playing the Sacramento Kings. Although a lot of Kobe fans were relented to see him retire, fortunately this did setup the Lakers to be able to do a whole lot of trading up during the off season. I think the Lakers will surprise more than a few people this season and be a real contender.

The Los Angeles Clippers will also be back. Starting with Thursday Oct 27 7:30 pm which is the opening game of the 2016/2017 NBA Basketball season for the LA Clippers playing the Portland Trail Blazers

Now, if you are thinking, ‘that yes’ there is a lot of sports going on in the month of October,
I haven’t even mentioned hockey yet. The NHL starts its season in October almost the same time as basketball.

We are so fortunate to have not just one but two hockey teams here is Southern CA and whether you are a Kings fan or a Ducks fan, doesn’t really matter, just like if you prefer the LA Angels or the LA Dodgers, doesn’t matter, you want both teams to do well at least until they play each other.

Wednesday Oct 12 7:30 pm is the opening game of the NHL Hockey season for the LA Kings with them playing the San Jose Sharks.

October is a great month to be a sports fan, there is such a wide assortment of sporting events. It’s also the end of summer with the weather cooling off, the leaves on the trees changing, and the days are getting shorter. It’s a great time to get off the sofa and take that long walk between watching all the games on TV.

Apparently there doesn’t seem to be enough room in dodger fan’s hearts for both the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers. I don’t know why either.

I have been a Laker fan since before Magic Johnson played for them instead of being a part owner of the Dodgers. For the most part, the Lakers have been a great team winning the NB Championships year after year. However, for the last couple of years there have been problems with the chemistry between players, the age of several of the players and the injuries. And although I know that it is just a matter of time that the LA Lakers will once again become the first class team that they once were.

http://www.nba.com/lakers/

The fact that I am a LA Laker fan doesn’t stop me from cheering for the Clippers, after all, they are a LA Team. I am still a Laker fan, but I am also a fan of LA Sports.

Any time a team from Southern California makes it to the playoff games, as a whole, we are better for it. Shouldn’t matter what LA Basketball team makes it to the playoffs, as long as someone does, I would prefer the Lakers, but will root for the Clippers. Why? Simple, it adds money to our local economy and it’s another notch in the belt for LA Sports.

Downtown business, whether it is hotels, motels, restaurants, or local stores, they all benefit. It also gives us, the Los Angeles Fan base, a reason to gloat.

You hear it all the time about how Southern CA and in peculiar, Los Angeles, is not into sports, how we don’t support our local teams. You especially hear this from the NFL, they love to use that as an excuse as to why LA doesn’t have or need a Football team.

The politics behind why Los Angeles doesn’t have an NFL team

The only time a Laker Fan should be rooting against the Clippers is when the Clipper are playing the Lakers or they are both tied for first place and the Lakers need a win.

www.NBA/clippers

It is sort of the same thing that happens between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

I am a true Dodger fan, in other words, I ‘bleed blue’. However, I will root for the Angels, except when they are actually playing the Dodgers. I will especially root for the Angels when they are playing a ‘National Team’ and from the same division as the Dodgers. Example is when the Angels play the D-backs or the Giants.

How about all the LA King fans that openly support the Anaheim Ducks when the Ducks instead of the LA Kings make the playoffs, as in this year! Would they prefer to be rooting for the LA Kings, YES! But, still better to have a Southern CA team in the playoffs than none! Go Ducks! Again this is good for Southern CA
Sports, there are a whole lot of hockey fans up north and on the east coast that didn’t even know we had a hockey team, much less two and that the LA Kings won the Stanley Cup last year and the Ducks just missed the Stanley Cup Finals by a single loss.

http://ducks.nhl.com/

What it comes down to is simple, as a Southern CA sports fan, we need to be there for all our teams regardless of what our favorites are.

Sports April 2015, a month to remember

April was a fun month for us sports fans! No matter what sports who follow, there was something going on.

April was the beginning of professional baseball, whether you are a Dodger fan or an Angel fan, it was great just to have the season start again.

www.Dodger.com

www.LAAngels.com

However there is still a dark side to the LA Dodgers; close to 70% of the market still is unable to see the Dodgers play and Vin Scully the game due to ‘Time Warner’ not making the games available outside their own customers.

Dodgers fans to remain in the dark as TV deal reportedly falls through!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/dodgers-fans-to-remain-in-the-dark-as-tv-deal-reportedly-falls-through-143820583.html

No matter who or who is not watching them, the Dodgers are off to a good start. In my opinion, several of their new players, such as Pederson, Anderson and Rollins are a real fine. However I do think that the Dodgers still need a great closer, especially with Jansen still out at least until mid-month. It’s not bad and it could be worse!

April was also the end of a very exciting men’s college basketball ‘March Madness’. We saw the end of Kentucky run for a perfect season with their loss to Wisconsin. Then it was on to watching Wisconsin loss to Duke in the finals. It was indeed a thriller!

Just as we got use to the fact that college basketball was done for the season, on comes the NBA playoffs. It was a bit concerning that once again the LA Lakers did not make the playoffs, however, the LA Clippers did. Go Clippers!

Lakers eliminated from playoffs, team’s earliest elimination in 54 years.

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/11/lakers-eliminated-from-playoffs-teams-earliest-elimination-in-54-years/

You also have the NHL playoffs being played during the month of April. The Anaheim Ducks are in the playoffs, but sadly the LA Kings managed to miss the playoffs.

It was quite a shock for LA King fans when after wining last year’s Stanley Cup, they failed to even make the playoff this year. However, that means that us, the fans that were rooting for the Kings, will now turn our support to the Anaheim Ducks, after all, it would still be a Southern CA team winning the Stanley Cup!

It is a good thing is that Southern California has at least two teams for most sports, your team does make the playoffs, chances are the other team might. Such as, Lakers out, Clippers in, Kings out, Ducks in, Dodgers in, Angels out, (or the other way around, to early to tell yet).

Even USC or UCLA fans will route for the other team if their team doesn’t make it to the playoffs. Still beats an ‘outsider winning’. It’s always better for Southern CA when one of our local teams win!

Too bad the same can’t be said for professional football, LA still has no team! But that’s a whole other topic for another blog.

April is also important for the NFL. Most teams are in the hunt for new players, trading old ones, gaining new ones, even restructuring old contracts and make new ones.

There has even been a few surprises, such as the Washington Redskins deciding to pull the ‘franchise tag’ for RG3, when everyone else thought the owner would use the opportunity to trade him.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/why-in-the-world-would-redskins-pick-up-rgiii-s-option–let-s-explore-151647567.html

The NFL also releases it’s fall schedule in April. LA Fans can start marking their calendars, booking their air flights, hotels and whatever they will need in order to attend either San Diego Charger or the Oakland Raiders games.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/2015-nfl-schedule–league-releases-the-full-regular-season-slate-000758569.html

This year, some team are really going outside the box in their attempt to gain depth in their rotations, even to the extent of the Eagles hiring Tim Tebow as their 4th Quarterback, A bit of an overkill, having 4 QB, but who knows. . .

April also brings us freaking weather in which baseball players have to deal with, we are all use to a bit of rain, in which we deal with rain delays, but how often do we see snow falling dealing a National Baseball Game, well it happened.

http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2015-04-22/yankees-tigers-snow-game-david-price-detroit-comerica-park

All in All, April was a great month for being a Sports Fan, can’t wait to see what May will bring!

The National football league completely ignores us here again in Southern California, (no surprise), but that has not stopped us from being Sports Fans!! Great Sports Fans at that !!

And there are plenty of sports to go around here in Southern CA; if you prefer baseball, are you an Angel or a Dodger fan? Do you bleed red or blue? And, although, it has been awhile, but both teams have won the World Series with the DODGERS winning the National Division Title for 2014.

If you love Hockey, are you a Duck Fan or a Kings Fan? Both teams have won the Stanley Cup and both teams do every well selling out their home games, even though we might not be able to watch them very often on our local TV/cable. Hopefully when the NHL’s contract with whatever company is responsible for showing the games on cable/TV, the NHL will push for a better deal and once again our favorite hockey teams will be shown again in prime time.

Perhaps basketball is your choice of sports, okay then, are you a Laker Fan or a Clipper fan? Both teams share the same arena, The Staple Center. This year has been a pretty good year for the Clipper fans. In the past the Clippers have always the bride’s maid never the bride, until this year that is, with the Lakers in last place and the Clippers fighting to take over first place. If you are a Laker fan, perhaps the best news will be that the Lakers are looking to add some younger player to their rouster and ditch some of their older players with over-the-top contracts. There is lots of gossip out there regarding Kobe finally tossing in the towel and retiring. Who knows? He has been saying that now for several years!

As for Football, we do have two of the best college teams available, are you a UCLA Fan or a USC Fan?
Each team has its share of devoted fans; some fans go back generations and have passed their choice of teams on to the next. You ask a young fan of either team and you will find that one of their grandparents went there or a cousin, uncle, whomever and it’s the same, whole families are fans for year after year after year.

Try getting tickets to any of the above sporting events and you know that no matter what the NFL says, Southern CA‘s love their sports. Our sporting events sell out game after game! Yet, the NFL repeatedly
States that southern CA cannot support a professional football team.

Sell-out there was close to 100,000 tickets sold. That’s more than a lot of the NFL stats for several of their teams.

Both the Dodgers and the Angels also fill their stadiums on a continuous basis. And the fans here are loyal, they attend year after year always in hope of a repeat visit to the World Series. It takes over 50,000 to sell out a Dodger game, and yet before and after the McCourt disaster, the fans have done just that and on a continuous bases year after year.

Even with a dreadful start to the season, the Lakers are still selling tickets to their home games, perhaps not selling out the games, but enough to let the Lakers know that the fans are still there and supporting them. The Clippers are also doing very well with their ticket sale.

It seems that although the NFL continues to think that our ‘market’ isn’t strong enough to support a ‘nationally rank team’. We, here in Southern CA are doing much better than other areas of the country that already have team, such as the Jacksonville Jaguars or how about the Arizona Cardinals, or my favorite, the Miami Dolphins. We continue to supporting our local teams no matter what the sport is.

NFL COMMISSIONER AXES LA TEAM IN 2015

In my opinion it comes down to money, it always comes down to the money! Don’t know how the money comes into it, because Southern CA already has several investors that are willing to put up a ‘chunk of change’ and there are several teams willing to discuss moving here. All I know is that we have not had a team here since the LA Rams moved to St. Louis and what use to be the LA Raiders, left in the middle of the night’ crawling back to Oakland and that was over 17 years ago.

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nfl/news/story?id=6057731

The talk of moving a team here as gone as far as investors locating 2 sites that could possibly work. One being near the Staples Center in downtown LA and the other being in the City of Industry where the
57 and the 60 freeways meet. Investors have drawn of plans, submitted them for approval and even put out feelers for NFL teams interested in moving here.

http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/los_angeles&id=8994427

What does Southern California get back in response for all this work, the NFL commission had decided to put the idea of moving a team to LA on the back burner for now. The NFL has more pressing problems to deal with according to Roger Goodell, who on a side note has just received a huge salary of nearly 30 million with bonus for his handling of the ‘lockout’ back in 2011.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/11/AR2011031107057.html

It is too bad that Southern CA can’t find a way to put pressure on the NFL and Goodell to place a higher
priory on this and get it moving again. There is money to be made by the NFL, the team that moves here , the owners and Southern CA. The sports fans here are ripe for the pick’ens, we just need a local team to support!

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/report-nfl-commissioner-roger-goodell-made-nearly-30-220809067–nfl.html

Now there’s talk of the new owner of the St Louis Rams wanting to move the team back to LA. It seems
That he owns property here, right next to the ‘Hollywood Park’ in Inglewood. He has informed the NFL that it would be the perfect spot for the new NFL stadium to be built.

Rams need to follow NFL process to move to L.A.: stadium panel chief
http://www.latimes.com/sports/nfl/la-sp-nfl-stadium-20150117-story.html#page=1

But again, it seems that the NFL commissioner is backing off making a decision and has informed the

Reflecting back on sports 2013

With 2013 winding to a close, it time to reflect on what has happened this past year in the world of sports and ask where did the time go?

http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?p=top+baseball+plays+of+2013

As a Dodger fan, it was definitely a good year under the new ownership. We saw some amazing pitching by Kershaw and Greinke. Kershaw even won the Cy Young. There were great plays by several Dodger players, such as Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez and Carl Crawford.

We also saw a rookie not only play well, but Yasiel Puig brought back excitement to the Dodger Stadium that the fans have not seen for several years. The Dodgers didn’t make it very far into the playoffs, but there is renewed hope for next year.

www.dodgers.com

Our local collages football teams also had a lot to offer us sports fans this past year. Without a NFL team in the Southern California both USC and UCLA get a awful lot of our support.

We found out what a difference a coach can make when dealing with a losing season, USC fires Lane Kiffin and turn the team over to an interim coach which turns the team completely around and leads the USC football to several wins.

However it was after the loss to UCLA that USC ended that coach’s rein and hire Steve Sarkisian from the Washington Huskies as the new coach for the 2014 season.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/college/usc/la-sp-1203-plaschke-usc-20131203-11,0,6325781.column#axzz2n2OTSyKr

With UCLA taking the win from USC at the Coliseum, it was a upset, UCLA has not beat USC at the Coliseum in a very long time. It was also two years and two wins in a row for UCLA against USC and that hasn’t happened for a long time either.

And although either UCLA or USC made it to any of the BCS Bowls, they will still play in a bowl game. It will be Stanford, with its win over Arizona, and won the Pac-12 title that will play Michigan at the Rose Bowl January 1. This was the second year in a row for the Stanford Trees.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls

We also saw lots of controversy in a lot of different sports. Baseball, NFL Football, hockey, basketball and even collage sports were not spare from making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Hopefully next year will be a better year for sports, with players not resorting to drugs and violence to solve their problems.

With the baseball season completely over until next season, all eyes on now on Hockey, Basketball and Football.

As parents, we set examples of we value in life to our children and that includes sports. We play sports and we watch sports, either in person or on TV. Most of us want our children to also include sports in their everyday life. We encourage them to watch sports with us, whether it’s baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer or football.

We also work very hard to get them involved in sports. We want them to play a sport, any sport.
We teach them to throw a ball at a very early age, most kids are taught this trick before even learning to walk.

Why Parents Pressure Kids in Sports?

http://voices.yahoo.com/why-parents-pressure-kids-sports-11118164.html

The hard part comes when our child starts to develop his or hers own interest. We love baseball, but our child thinks it is the most boring game on the planet; they want to play soccer or basketball. We love football, yet again they want to play baseball. It never fails! Our children have their own minds and will decide what sport if any, they will play.

And what do we do as a parent? We take a crash course in the sport that our child wants to play.

I have a dear friend that knew nothing of BMX off-course bike riding, but she does now! Her little princess is a major contender in this sport, and my friend who once would never miss a LA Angel baseball rarely gets to go to one now.

As a parent we also have to help gently guide our children into not picking the wrong sport for them. Nothing is more heartbreaking for a parent that to watch their child not success in a sport that they
really wanted to play. And believe it or not it happens a lot, a small built child not matter how much they want to complete in basketball or football could get hurt or not even get the chance to play.
Or a child that wants to play soccer more than anything, but due to allergies can’t play on the grass.

it is not an easy as it was in the past. As a parent in today’s environment, we now know about the health risks to a person that plays football. Concussions suffered during the game early on can be devastating for these players as early in their lives as their mid-forties.

Our children see how much football is loved in this country; they see the rewards for players that make it to the NFL. They also know that even if they are not good enough to go to the NFL, their skills in football could give them a chance to go to the college of their choice for very little money.

Most high schools are under-funded for their sports programs and it probably didn’t show up in sports like baseball, swimming or even basketball, but football? Does the school have the latest and best equipment out there for the players that play football? And if high schools can’t provide it, how can it be expected by the Pop-Warner leagues!

Passing of the Torch In the World of Sports

pass the torchIt happens in every aspect of life ‘What goes up comes down’ ‘In today –Out Tomorrow’ and it is really apparent when the ‘Passing of the Torch’ happens in the world of sports.

It happened when the Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007 and the Los Angeles Kings were on the down and out. The kings have since managed to retake the throne winning the Stanley Cup in 2012, but how long will it last. This season the Ducks are once again leading the way. score.espn.com

It also showed up with the Anaheim Angels winning the World Series in 2002 something that has alluded the LA Dodgers since 1988. The Dodgers have not been able to regain their top spot in Southern California for many, many years. Dodger fans are hopeful that with this year’s new ownership, things will change, but so far, it has been less than a good start for them. sportsillustrated

Now we get to the biggest ‘pasting of the torch’ that has occurred in recent sports history, and that my fellow sports fan is what has happened to the Lakers.

sports, los angeles lakers The mighty have fallen, so to speak, many claim that the team is just old and need new and younger players, but who knows?

However, whatever the reasons, The Clippers, which has always been ‘the other team’, the bride-maid, never the bride, the team that late night comedians poked fun at, have de-throned the Lakers this year. Have stepped into the lime-light. Clippers

The Clippers weren’t always the Los Angeles Clippers, in fact, from 1970 to 1978 they were known as the Buffalo Braves. Then in 1978 the team moved to San Diego and changed their name to the Clippers. Clipper History

In the team’s first season in San Diego, it posted a record of 43–39 under new head coach Gene Shue, leaving them two wins shy of the final playoff spot. It would be the Clippers’ last winning season for 13 years.

The 1981–82 season brought changes to the franchise as Irv Levin sold the team to Los Angeles-area real estate developer and attorney Donald Sterling for US $12.5 million. The Clippers’ poor play in the final years in San Diego resulted in averaging only 4,500 fans a game. Sterling lobbied the NBA to relocate the team to his native Los Angeles. Which they did in 1984, and once again changing their name to ‘The Los Angeles Clippers. They played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

It wasn’t until 1992 when they added several players and a new the coach that the franchise had its first winning season in 13 years.

But, once again the Clippers were on the move, only this time is was a short hop from LA County to Orange County and from 1994 to 1998, the Clippers called the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, their home, sharing the venue with the NHL’s Mighty Anaheim Ducks.

However, in 1999, the Clippers joined the Lakers and Los Angeles Kings in the new Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles. This final movie did improve their fan attendance, but it also placed them face to face with fighting the highly-popular Lakers for the LA fan base and the Clippers, with relatively low success, have always being overshadowed by the Lakers until this year.

Clippers division winners

Congrats to the Los Angeles Clippers for finally winning their division.

Hockey’s Back

HOCKEY’S BACK, BUT AT WHAT COST?

hockey back at what costNHL owners finally ratify new collective bargaining agreement and as we all know that means Hockey is back, as of January 19, 2013. It is scheduled to end on April 27, 2013, with the playoff starting in June.

However, Hockey was supposed to start October 11, 2012. What happened?

It all started back on September 13, 2012, when all 29 league ownership groups authorized commissioner, Gary Bettman, to lock out the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) upon the expiration of the NHL collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on September 15.

This action marked the fifth labor dispute in twenty years for the NHL, following a 1992 strike, lockouts in 1994 to 1995 and 2004 to 2005, as well as a referees lockout in 1993;. This is more than any of the other major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada during this period.

And it is not just the regular season that was shorten, the All-Star Game which was originally scheduled to take place January 27, 2013, in Columbus, Ohio, has cancelled as a result of the lockout

Gary Bettman, the commissioner, has apologizes to NHL fans for lockout, says he’s sorry. http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/story/2013/01/09/sp-nhl-hockey-gary-bettman-apologizes-to-fans.html
He is apologizing to hockey fans for the lockout that delayed the start of the season by three months. He says he knows the apology will not ease hard feelings that have built up over the past few months but he feels the fans deserve one.

He also wouldn’t say specifically what the league would do to make it up to the fans. Hopefully the fans that had already purchased ‘season tickets’ before the lockout had no problems getting their refunds for games NOT played.

He adds that as commissioner he is sometimes forced to make tough decisions that disappoint and occasionally anger players and fans.

A 48-game season was played following the 1994-95 NHL lockout and that allowed for a balanced intra-conference schedule in what was then a 26-team league.

It’s going to be a little more complicated this time around.
The league is planning to have teams play three games against the 10 opponents within the same conference but outside their division. They will then have an unbalanced schedule against division rivals, with five games coming against two teams and four against the two others, according to a source.

But what started the whole disaster? Who is to blame? Owners, Players ??? Actually the blame goes to ‘money’ and with both owners and players want more of it.

It’s the same old story with all the major sports, baseball, basketball and football; everyone wants a bigger piece of the pie. The 2012- 2013 NHL lockout was considered a labor dispute that began at 11:59 pm EDT on September 15, 2012, and ended at 4:45 am EST on January 6, 2013, lasting 113 days.

At issue for the owners were desires to reduce the players’ guaranteed 57% share of hockey-related revenues (HRR), introduce term limits on contracts, eliminate salary arbitration, and change free agency rules. The union’s initial offers focused on increased revenue sharing between owners and a fixed salary cap that is not linked to league revenues.

During the lockout, many NHL players went to other leagues in North America and Europe. Many businesses in the United States and Canada located near NHL arenas lost money as a result of the games not played.

The real loser of this whole mess is the fans, we will definitely pay more to see each game, we will see less games, no all-star game this year and the worst part is that there is no guarantee that is won’t happen again!
