Sports updates for 9/14

Are you ready for the 2nd half of September and Sports? There is only a few months in the year where the ‘hype’ for various sports comes crashing together. September is such a month!

We are in the last month of the regular season of Major League Baseball. The 2014 Baseball Playoffs will start the very first week of October and to add even more drama, each league will send 2 wildcard teams to the playoffs this year instead of one each! www.mlb.com

With the Major League Baseball Playoffs just around the corner in the month of October. Who will represent the National league and who will represent the American league is the baseball lover’s first question on their mind? The second question is who will survive the playoffs to meet in the 2014 World Series.

Some familiar teams and a couple of new ones look like they will be fighting all the way to the end for a chance to make the ‘Playoffs’ and move on to the chance to play in the World Series.

The first wild card playoff game is already schedule to be held October 1st with ‘The World Series Games’ scheduled to start October 23rd. There is also the game of the moving and trading around of players and managers, which will start as soon as the very next day after the end of the regular season.

Both Dodger and Angel baseball fans are getting very excited just thinking about the possible of a playoff scenario between the Dodgers and the Angels, who at the beginning of September were both in first place.

However, in the National League, the Dodgers first have to stay in first place by staying ahead of the Giants, then get past the Washington Nationals and the St Louis Cardinals plus 2 wild card teams. www.dodgers.com

The American League will see the LA Angels have to get past the Baltimore Orioles and the Kansas City Royals, and again 2 wild card teams. www.LAAngels.com

Also in September, we see the start of the NFL season, and due to the increase in popularity of football, brought on by the millions of people that play fantasy football, we will now see NFL football on Thursday, Sunday and Monday’s.
www.NFL.com

Starting in September and lasting all the way until January you have millions now
playing Fantasy Football. It has been so ingrained in our way of life that it is hard to imagine life before someone invented the thing. All I know that it has changed the way people now watch football. It is now more about the individual players and their stats than the actual teams. Amazing!

For those of us that want more than just watching the NFL, there is also College football which has also just started with both UCLA and USC winning their two game of their new season.

So far this season, College Football has proven why it has also grown in popularity over the last several years. There has been several huge upsets already and in a playoff system that doesn’t left much room for teams that lose every one game, losing your first or second game can end the collage team’s dream of making it to the BCS Championship game in 2015.

By the way, in case you have heard, the NCAA Football playoff system has been changed to further meet the demands of the growing amount of fans. You might want to check out this link if you need an update.

Little League Baseball

Kids can't wait to play baseball

Kids can’t wait to play baseball

It doesn’t take long, just a few years and your child is already nagging you, they want to play sports. They have their favorites, whether it is basketball, baseball, soccer, or even football.

However, the number one favorite sport for the younger child is baseball.

As early as four years old, they want to play. Both girls and boys are encouraged to sign up for Little League at their neighborhood sign-up drive. Usually these are held at one of the local little league baseball fields.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_League_Baseball

It starts with T-ball.

It is where the ball is actually placed on a T and the child is encouraged to hit the ball and run to first place. It is so much fun to see the little ones get their first hit and get so excited that they forget where they are suppose to run to.

How many kids play Little League baseball in the US? How about over 50 million in the US alone and more than 100 million kids play little league in the world according to wiki.answers.com
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_League_Baseball

Playing Little League baseball teaches children all about fair play, rules and most importantly how to get along with other kids. It will teach them that losing is part of life and it is how we deal with the losses that helps built our children’s character.
http://www.ehow.com/list_7806834_little-league-baseball-age-rules.html

As parents of Little Leaguers we get to stand by our children, which means learn all the rules. We provide team snacks and encouragement for the whole team. There is also a really great side benefit for us, the parents. After spending countless hours watching our kids practice and then play game after game, we become very close to the other parents. We do the ‘car pool’ thing, exchange phone numbers and/or emails and we do it all for our kids. The funny thing is that long after our children have grown up and are no longer playing Little League, we, the parents are still friends and we still stay in contact with each other.

Little League was founded by Carl Stotz in 1939 as a three-team league in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It is still is a non-profit organization based in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, which organizes local youth baseball and softball leagues throughout the U.S. and the rest of the world.

The non-profit organization of Little League does meet now and then, then take the opportunity to review the rules, make necessary changes it keep up with the times.

The latest rule change that will make a large impact is the change to the age limit. Starting in 2018, 13-year-olds will not be allowed to play in the regular Little League. However Little League will provide 13-year-olds with the option of playing in the intermediate 50-70 division or in its junior league classification

http://www.pennlive.com/sports/index.ssf/2014/04/rule_change_to_keep_13-year-ol.html

No matter how good or not so good your child plays baseball, the memories of playing baseball, hitting that baseball and their first catch will stay with them forever. It also does hurt that the local Major League baseball teams do support Little League and offer incentives to the kids. On April 27 of this year, over 10,000 little leaguers attending the Dodger game.

And on June 1 when the Dodgers play the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Dodgers will be hosting, the ‘Dodger Youth Baseball Parade Day #4 – celebrating Little League’s 75th Anniversary. Little Leaguers in uniform will get to parade the field before the game.
www.dodgers.comThe Basball
There is also another benefit to playing Little League Baseball; your child might actually be good, good enough to make the high school baseball team, perhaps even a scholarship to college.
The grand prize would be if your child actually made it to the ‘Majors’. It not that farfetched, just about every single baseball player out there got their start playing baseball in Little League or some other youth baseball group.

As spoken often by our favorite sports announcer, Vin Scully ‘It’s time for Dodger Baseball ‘ and if you are a Dodger fan it hasn’t come soon enough.

www.Dodgers.com

This year, however, it was a bit confusing, at least for me it was. It seems that the Season opener was played down under in Australia on March 22. But it was only the season opener for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamond-Backs. The rest of the MLB was still in their spring training mode.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/dodgers-prove-it-s-just-a-game–even-in-australia-135056854.html;_ylt=AwrBJR7AFkZTMn8AextNbK5_

It was fun to see the Dodgers play in Australia at Sydney Cricket Grounds, to see the all the Dodgers and D-Backs fans in attendance.

Dodgers returning home from Australia with two wins, villain role still intact

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/dodgers-returning-home-from-australia-with-two-wins–villain-role-still-intact-072221837.html;_ylt=AwrBJR7AFkZTMn8AeBtNbK5_

In fact, it seems that after a few days of rest, the Dodgers were also back in spring training with the very popular ‘freeway series’ being played against their cross-town rivals, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. One game being played in at the Dodger Stadium and the second game played at the Angel Stadium.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/angels-beat-dodgers-7-5-052656674–mlb.html;_ylt=AwrBJR7AFkZTMn8AehtNbK5_

The second opening of the Dodger season came with them playing the San Diego Padres in San Diego on March 30. Which they won two and loss one

March 30, was also the official start of the 2014 baseball season for The North American part of the season with the season officially coming to an end on September 28 with the playoffs stating right after that.

The Dodger’s Home Opening game was on April 4, against our arched rivals, the San Francisco Giants and it was a total sell out with over 53,000 fans in attendance. Unfortunately, the Dodgers lost. They looked tired and played sloppy. You have to wonder if ‘jet lag’ had anything to do with it. It didn’t help either that Kershaw was unable to pitch for the opener due to injuring his back from either his pitching in Australia or somehow injured the back during the long flight home.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/trip-down-under-not-necessarily-to-blame-for-kershaw-injury-040414

However how his back got hurt, he was unable to pitch at the Home Opener, which had become a Dodger tradition at the Stadium. Hyun-Jin Ryu made his third start in five games due to him replacing the scheduled starter Clayton Kershaw, and it
did not bode well for the Dodgers, they lost that game 4 to 8.

question markMy questions to the MLB, is why not play the games in Australia or where-ever the MLB chooses, done at the beginning of or during Spring Training? This way the players would have a chance to totally recover from the time-change, jet lag and/or the lack of sleep. It would also fix the problem of having 2 ‘opening days’ for the teams and their fans that do the traveling.

www.mlb.

It has been a rocky start for the Dodgers, but it is only the beginning of the season, there is still plenty of games left for the Dodgers to show off their strengths and I, as well as many other Dodgers fans will be there with them to the end of the season and hopefully the playoffs and the World Series.

Lets Gossip About Sports

Sports blog – February 2014

Both man and woman gossip about sports

Both men and women gossip about sports

One of the biggest myths around is that women love to gossip and not men. Yet gossip seems to take center court over and over again in the world of sports.

Why? Simple it sells! And not just to the women fans but all fans across all ages!

Why does the stories surrounding A-Rod capture the front page of the news over and over again, does anyone really care who he suing today or will be suing tomorrow or that the MLB players Union wants him gone or that the Yankees, themselves want him gone as well? Apparently yes!

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mlb-players-association-would-expel-a-rod-if-it-could-171857810.html

Let’s not forget there is also the fact that ‘bad news’ sells. If you watch or listen to Sports Central, or ESPN the headlines are usually reserved for the ‘bad guys first. Who trashed talk who takes up more TV time than who actually won the game. First comes the ‘trash talk’ and the comments from every sports commentator that can be found, then of course the time allotted to the ‘I’m Sorry’ campaign by the trash talker himself.

Carroll says Sherman sorry rant overshadowed win
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/carroll-says-sherman-sorry-rant-004022049–nfl.html

Now you add the time for the rebuttal by the fans of the team that the trash talker plays on that were interview and you have an awful large amount of time spend on ‘bad news’

Seattle soft? 12th Man shows it has Richard Sherman’s back amid criticism of Seahawk’s postgame behavior.

Even more time than was spend showing the highlights of the game. I personally get a little frustrated with this. I would love the ‘sports world’ to spend more time with showing the positive aspects of sports, but then again, apparently that isn’t what gains views/fans.

Premature ejaculation treatment in pfizer viagra discount delhi is not done frequently. Another example of this phenomena shows up again when a book is written by someone in the sports world and although the book has probably many sport stories in it, the one that gets noticed by ‘Sports TV’ is the negative ones.

Example of this is when Former prominent NFL agent Leigh Steinberg wrote in a book released Tuesday that he advised quarterback Ryan Leaf not to attend a meeting with the Indianapolis Colts, who would then select Peyton Manning instead with the top overall pick in the 1998.

Steinberg: Leaf duped Colts out of drafting him in ’98
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/steinberg-leaf-duped-colts-drafting-183729125–nfl.html
Like I said, only the fact that someone might have done something ‘bad’ to some else, did the fact the Mr. Steinberg even got his book mentioned on TV.

And even then the world of sports didn’t stop with just mentioning the book; they have actually taking time to track down the persons involved for their side of the story to air on TV.

All this makes for good drama TV and slowly and completely taking over our sports world. We care more about what players do off the field of battle. What drugs they might have taken, who they are dating, or who’s getting a divorce. The average sports fan is still obsessed with any and all news that hits the airwaves concerning Aaron Hernandez, it doesn’t even matter that he is in jail and no longer playing football for the New England Patriots.

Police: Hernandez eyed as gunman in 2012 slayings
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/warrant-hernandez-eyed-gunman-2012-160757215–spt.html;_ylt=AwrSyCMg0N5SAjQAt0BNbK5_;_ylu=X3oDMTBmMnFmanUyBHNlYwNzYwRjb2xvA2dxMQ–

It’s tough to explain to a small child who is just starting to show an interest in sports, that there is more to sports than the above, that there are still players out there that play for the sheer joy of being able to play. There are still players out there that are good but never make the headlines, they play by all the rules, even the ‘golden’ rules.

This Past Year In The World Of Shorts

Sports Blog – December 2013

Reflection back on sports 2013

Reflecting back on sports 2013

With 2013 winding to a close, it time to reflect on what has happened this past year in the world of sports and ask where did the time go?

http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video?p=top+baseball+plays+of+2013

As a Dodger fan, it was definitely a good year under the new ownership. We saw some amazing pitching by Kershaw and Greinke. Kershaw even won the Cy Young. There were great plays by several Dodger players, such as Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez and Carl Crawford.

We also saw a rookie not only play well, but Yasiel Puig brought back excitement to the Dodger Stadium that the fans have not seen for several years. The Dodgers didn’t make it very far into the playoffs, but there is renewed hope for next year.

www.dodgers.com

Our local collages football teams also had a lot to offer us sports fans this past year. Without a NFL team in the Southern California both USC and UCLA get a awful lot of our support.

We found out what a difference a coach can make when dealing with a losing season, USC fires Lane Kiffin and turn the team over to an interim coach which turns the team completely around and leads the USC football to several wins.

However it was after the loss to UCLA that USC ended that coach’s rein and hire Steve Sarkisian from the Washington Huskies as the new coach for the 2014 season.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/college/usc/la-sp-1203-plaschke-usc-20131203-11,0,6325781.column#axzz2n2OTSyKr

With UCLA taking the win from USC at the Coliseum, it was a upset, UCLA has not beat USC at the Coliseum in a very long time. It was also two years and two wins in a row for UCLA against USC and that hasn’t happened for a long time either.

And although either UCLA or USC made it to any of the BCS Bowls, they will still play in a bowl game. It will be Stanford, with its win over Arizona, and won the Pac-12 title that will play Michigan at the Rose Bowl January 1. This was the second year in a row for the Stanford Trees.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls

We also saw lots of controversy in a lot of different sports. Baseball, NFL Football, hockey, basketball and even collage sports were not spare from making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Hopefully next year will be a better year for sports, with players not resorting to drugs and violence to solve their problems.

What to expect in the early part of 2014

The NFL playoffs start with ‘wild card weekend’ January 4 and 5. The Divisional Playoffs are scheduled for January 11 and 12th. The Conference Championships games will be played January 19 with the winners going on to play in the ‘Super Bowl’.

The XLVIII Super Bowl is returning to New York as the NFL stages its first cold-weather Super Bowl in an open-air stadium on February 2, 2014. They are even preparing for the chance that the Super Bowl might become the ‘Snow Bowl’ of 2014.

Kids and Sports

kids and sports

With the baseball season completely over until next season, all eyes on now on Hockey, Basketball and Football.

As parents, we set examples of we value in life to our children and that includes sports. We play sports and we watch sports, either in person or on TV. Most of us want our children to also include sports in their everyday life. We encourage them to watch sports with us, whether it’s baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer or football.

We also work very hard to get them involved in sports. We want them to play a sport, any sport.
We teach them to throw a ball at a very early age, most kids are taught this trick before even learning to walk.

Why Parents Pressure Kids in Sports?

http://voices.yahoo.com/why-parents-pressure-kids-sports-11118164.html

The hard part comes when our child starts to develop his or hers own interest. We love baseball, but our child thinks it is the most boring game on the planet; they want to play soccer or basketball. We love football, yet again they want to play baseball. It never fails! Our children have their own minds and will decide what sport if any, they will play.

And what do we do as a parent? We take a crash course in the sport that our child wants to play.

I have a dear friend that knew nothing of BMX off-course bike riding, but she does now! Her little princess is a major contender in this sport, and my friend who once would never miss a LA Angel baseball rarely gets to go to one now.

She spends most Saturdays and Sundays at various BMX competitions.

Sports: Should Parents Push Their Children to Play?

As a parent we also have to help gently guide our children into not picking the wrong sport for them. Nothing is more heartbreaking for a parent that to watch their child not success in a sport that they
really wanted to play. And believe it or not it happens a lot, a small built child not matter how much they want to complete in basketball or football could get hurt or not even get the chance to play.
Or a child that wants to play soccer more than anything, but due to allergies can’t play on the grass.

This is when being a parent is not easy! We want our children to play sports. It healthy for them, it teaches them that it is OK not to win all the time, and it gives them a sense of purchase. They get ‘The team needs them attitude’.

However, if you are a parent with a young child that has decided to play football,

it is not an easy as it was in the past. As a parent in today’s environment, we now know about the health risks to a person that plays football. Concussions suffered during the game early on can be devastating for these players as early in their lives as their mid-forties.

Our children see how much football is loved in this country; they see the rewards for players that make it to the NFL. They also know that even if they are not good enough to go to the NFL, their skills in football could give them a chance to go to the college of their choice for very little money.

It is a decision that I am glad I don’t have to make. How safe is Pop-Warner football? How save is High School Football? How protective is the equipment that our kids are using? Most high schools are under-funded for their sports programs and it probably didn’t show up in sports like baseball, swimming or even basketball, but football? Does the school have the latest and best equipment out there for the players that play football? And if high schools can’t provide it, how can it be expected by the Pop-Warner leagues!

It’s A Baseball Classic, Bad Calls

Your Call, Safe at Home or Not

Your Call, Safe at Home or Not

A lot of noise is being made by baseball team owners, the fans, the players and even the sports announcer regarding the increase in ‘bad calls’ by the officials or Umpire

It’s a baseball classic problem and always has been.

Why do you think ‘Kill the Umpire’ was a favorite saying way back when, before it became ‘politely incorrect’.
We have come to accept them as such. As fans, we holler and boo the umpires whenever it happens to our team and when our player and manager get throw out of the game for protesting the call, we cheer them on.

Team managers and players hint at the bad calls when questioned, but know better than to actually discuss it with the media do to possible fines and suspension by the MLB. So, nothing has really changed it’s just a baseball classic

It is a part of baseball and has been part of the game for the 160+ years that baseball has been professional played.

Umpires have always had the last word that is until recently. With Social Media comes a more intense scrutinizing of their actions. This has led to many of their so called ‘blow calls’ being questioned and why the call for change!

April 8 –The Rays played the Rangers

April 28 – The Rays as a team, could not be kept quiet after another supposedly bad call.

And let’s not forgot the May 5, 2013 Nationals, when the Umpires used Bryce Harper as an example of their authority over the game of baseball.

The May 8, 2013 game of Cleveland vs Oakland, the umpires, even with the use of ‘instance replay’ still managed to blow a call.

The worse seem to come when not only are the umpires blowing calls now and then, but they don’t even seem to know the rules of the game. The May 09, 2013 Angel Game, the Umpires allowed an illegal switch of pitchers.

On May 10 – there was fallout from the Angel vs Astro game for the umpires NOT knowing the rules of the game. Major League Baseball announced it had suspended crew chief Fieldin Culbreth for two games and fined umpires Adrian Johnson, Brian O’Nora and Bill Welke for missing a rule so basic and ingrained in the game that even kids knew it.

Then we have the possible of ‘the revenge of the umpires’ when Umpire Angel Hernandez was suspected to have let a botched call stand as an objection to the use of instance replay on May 10.

The list goes on and on it seems that not a day goes by without another ‘bad call making the headlines. There is arguments on all sides, Umpires, MLB, and Team Owners that something must be done. Do Umpires need to pay more, but does more money equal smarter umpires? Do we need instance re-play extended for more than to double check if a home run is indeed a home run? Do Umpires need more education?

Maybe, but even with all the above, it still might not be enough. As our technology gets better and better, sports announcer, fans at home watching their HD TV sets and with the use of slow motion and zoom capabilities, Umpires will always be the underdogs and will sometimes get the play wrong.

As I am writing this blog and trying to wrap it up, there was yet another ‘blow call’ by an umpire in the Brewer vs Phillies game. The Brewers won with the help of the bad call with Brewers’ Jean Segura credited for tag despite dropping ball in critical ninth inning blown call.

It appears that this is not going away anytime soon!

In The World Of Sports

Passing of the Torch In the World of Sports

pass the torchIt happens in every aspect of life ‘What goes up comes down’ ‘In today –Out Tomorrow’ and it is really apparent when the ‘Passing of the Torch’ happens in the world of sports.

It happened when the Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007 and the Los Angeles Kings were on the down and out. The kings have since managed to retake the throne winning the Stanley Cup in 2012, but how long will it last. This season the Ducks are once again leading the way. score.espn.com

It also showed up with the Anaheim Angels winning the World Series in 2002 something that has alluded the LA Dodgers since 1988. The Dodgers have not been able to regain their top spot in Southern California for many, many years. Dodger fans are hopeful that with this year’s new ownership, things will change, but so far, it has been less than a good start for them. sportsillustrated

Now we get to the biggest ‘pasting of the torch’ that has occurred in recent sports history, and that my fellow sports fan is what has happened to the Lakers.

sports, los angeles lakers The mighty have fallen, so to speak, many claim that the team is just old and need new and younger players, but who knows?

However, whatever the reasons, The Clippers, which has always been ‘the other team’, the bride-maid, never the bride, the team that late night comedians poked fun at, have de-throned the Lakers this year. Have stepped into the lime-light. Clippers

The Clippers weren’t always the Los Angeles Clippers, in fact, from 1970 to 1978 they were known as the Buffalo Braves. Then in 1978 the team moved to San Diego and changed their name to the Clippers. Clipper History

In the team’s first season in San Diego, it posted a record of 43–39 under new head coach Gene Shue, leaving them two wins shy of the final playoff spot. It would be the Clippers’ last winning season for 13 years.

The 1981–82 season brought changes to the franchise as Irv Levin sold the team to Los Angeles-area real estate developer and attorney Donald Sterling for US $12.5 million. The Clippers’ poor play in the final years in San Diego resulted in averaging only 4,500 fans a game. Sterling lobbied the NBA to relocate the team to his native Los Angeles. Which they did in 1984, and once again changing their name to ‘The Los Angeles Clippers. They played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

It wasn’t until 1992 when they added several players and a new the coach that the franchise had its first winning season in 13 years.

But, once again the Clippers were on the move, only this time is was a short hop from LA County to Orange County and from 1994 to 1998, the Clippers called the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, their home, sharing the venue with the NHL’s Mighty Anaheim Ducks.

However, in 1999, the Clippers joined the Lakers and Los Angeles Kings in the new Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles. This final movie did improve their fan attendance, but it also placed them face to face with fighting the highly-popular Lakers for the LA fan base and the Clippers, with relatively low success, have always being overshadowed by the Lakers until this year.

Clippers division winners

Congrats to the Los Angeles Clippers for finally winning their division.
