This year is was a little different. Both teams came in to the playoffs, not as winners but as ‘runner ups’, the wild cards. No Division winners!

How many times since the MLB has been keeping records has two wild cards teams beat all the odds and end up in the game of games, The World Series.

The two wild card teams for the National League were the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants.

You had die-hard baseball fans dreaming of a Dodger vs Angels or perhaps an Oriole vs Nationals. There were also a huge number of sports fans thinking how cool would it be to have an East coast team play a West coast team, just imagine the what the TV ratings would have been.

Unfortunately for every single division winner, they lost! More importantly, they lost BIG! The Angels and the Tigers in the American League lost 3 games straight in the very first round of the playoffs. The Orioles lost to the Royals, who were the long shot, being the wild card winner in the second round of the playoffs.

All three division winners in the American League are done and gone!

It wasn’t much better with the National league, a little, but not by much!

The St Louis Cardinals actually made it to the second round of the playoff only to lose to the Giants. At least with the Cardinals it took five games for the Giants to take the win.

So, there you have it, two wild card teams that managed to hang on and beat supposedly better teams, or least teams with better records.

Of course the baseball players are not immune from the fallout. There will be the traditionally moving around of players, some with be traded or sent back to the triple A. Some players will just be let go, especially the players who will be a ‘free agent’ but next season.
