It’s almost that time of year again, time for March Madness.

As the NFL and college football season came to an end, most sport fans turned their attention to ending of College Basketball and the NCCA Basketball playoffs, commonly known as March Madness’.

With the introduction of ‘Bracketology’ came a whole new set of fans eagerly waiting for the tournament to begin.

It’s not just about your favorite college making the playoffs, but the college teams that you have selected to win and keep moving towards to Championship game.

As for us sport fans here in California there is good news if you are a USC or a Stanford fan. It looks like both teams will make it into the playoffs.

Both colleges are doing well enough to probably earn a spot in the playoffs. However if you are a fan of either Berkeley or UCLA, the news is not encouraging.

This will be the second year in a row that UCLA somehow, someway did not make the playoffs.

In the Pac-12, they are the eleventh place team of the twelve. The last time UCLA won the NCCA Championship was in 2012

In fact, UCLA is struggling with its football and basketball programs.

You have to wonder why?. UCLA has such a strong background in basketball ever since the days of Coach John Wooden, which was from 1948 to 1975 leading UCLA to 10 NCAA Division Championships.

It’s the month of May and I’m still recovering from March/April’s NCAA Basketball tournament. For the most part, most of the games were terrific. Some of the best basketball I have personally seen in quite a while.

Congratulations to Virginia for winning the Championship Game, but also congrats to Texas Tech for even getting to the final. Lots of fans that follow the NCAA tournament were surprised to see Duke and North Carolina go down so early in the tournament, including me.

But now it’s on the NBA finals. Once again the Los Angeles Lakers did not make the playoffs, how many years does this make now?

Back in 2012 the Lakers actually made it to the first round but lost to the Spurs. Back in 2011 they made it to the second round, but lost to the Thunder. It hasn’t been since 2010 that the LA Lakers beat the Celtics to win the NBA Finals.

Now the Los Angeles Clippers have fared a bit better than their rivals, they have at least made it to the first round of the playoffs

The last day of the NBA regular season was Wednesday, April 10. And the 2019 NBA playoffs began three days later on Saturday, April 13.

The Clippers played the Golden State Warriors in the first game of round 1 and lost. However, in the second game of round 1 the Clippers who were losing by over 30 points, managed to actually win the game. Unfortunately for the Clipper fans, they did not make it to the second round.

As sports fans we know that there is always ‘next year’, but it does get a bit tiring when ‘next year’ doesn’t seem to ever come.

Hopefully with a new manager, and a few good choices in the draft, the Lakers can once again become the power house they use to be, as well as the Clippers.

Last month when I hinted at the coming of ‘March Madness, the Pac 12 Division showed the Washington Huskies will be a shoe in to make the tournament as they are still in first place, however, UCLA still need to improve, which it still does, UCLA is in fifth place in the Pac 12 and although it was in deep trouble has managed to move from ninth to fifth. USC had made a huge improvement and were once in fifth place, looking to continue moving up the standings, however, by the end of February had move down a few slots to seventh

The ups and downs of being a Dodger Fan!

It has been a really rough roller coaster ride for us Dodger Fans this past season.

I am not even close to getting over last year’s distastes seventh game of the ‘world series’, which I still hold Dave Roberts accountable for since he is the one that decided to play Yu Davish instead of ANYONE else especially after Davish have cause the loss in the second game and even after that the game he should be pulled out sooner than what he was. But that last year.

I assumed that the rough start to this past season was due to the Dodgers not being fully recovered over the loss of the World Series. And it was a difficult start for the Dodgers, with only 12 wins and a whopping 16 losses in the months of March and April.

And the roller-coast ride began.

The month of May was not much better for the Dodgers, with 14 wins and 14 losses. We also saw several pitchers and players hit the DL list. Such injuries as Kershaw going down again and as well as Hill having to take a few days off due to a blister. Kershaw’s injury put him on the side lines until late June.

The good news is that for the month of June we saw a glimmer of our former Dodgers start to emerge. The Dodgers had 17 wins and only 9 losses. The Boys in blue might be back, and that was great! It was once again fun to see them play; they seemed happier, more in tune with playing as a team and they were winning!

Just before the ‘All Star ‘ break, the Dodgers were riding high, out of a total of 14 games before the break, they had managed to win 10 of them . July 2 the Dodgers played the Pirates and the dodgers didn’t just win they WON big with the final score of 17-1. The Dodgers continued their winning ways even after the break.

The Dodgers finally were making a run for first place in their division. The Arizona Cardinals and the Colorado Rockies were their only threat.

Then came August, not the best month for the boys in blue, once again they slipped down the rankings.
The Dodgers only got 14 wins and suffered 13 losses. What was funny was that every so many games the Dodgers just blew the other team out of the water.

On August 2, against the Braves with Kershaw pitching, they scored a team record of 21 runs, but then on August 4, against the Astros, with Maeda pitching, the Dodgers lost and lost big, the score was Dodgers zero and the Astros 14.

The whole month of August was filled with games that showed the Dodgers do know how to hit, get on base and even string the hits together and score runs. The month also showed that the team was loaded with really good pitchers.

Then you have the other games in August that showed major flaws and weakness in the way the game was being structure, especially in base running. Have to wonder is the players making the judgment calls and choosing wrong, or do you blame the manager, Dave Roberts.

The month of September has brought the whole ‘roller coaster ride’ to both its highest point, then straight down to the lowest. September saw the downfall of the Arizona Cardinals, and the Dodgers sweep the Colorado Rockies to assume ‘First Place’.

But we also saw the Dodgers slip back into second place with two losses to the third place team, the Cardinals.

As the Dodgers closed out the final 3 games of the 2018 season, they are still in second place and were trying to secure a playoff spot as the National league Wild Card team.

Much to the delight of a whole lot of Dodger Fans, the Dodgers actually managed to tie the Rockies for First Place in the National West Division. Which would call for a sudden death game, the winner takes the division and the loser takes the wild card.

We all held our breathe as the Rockies played the Dodgers at the Dodger Stadium on October 1 to see who would enter the playoffs as the division leader or as a wild card team, and we all celebrated the Dodgers easy win over the Rockies to move on in the playoffs.

October 2, the Rockies played the Chicago Cubs as the two wild card teams for the National League, battling it out to see who moves on in the MLB Playoffs. The Rockies managed to beat the Cubs 3 to 2, but it took 10 innings to do it.

March Madness has come and is gone for 2018. The last game, the National Championship Game, was played Monday April 2 and Villanova beat Michigan to become this year’s winner of the NCAA Basketball March Madness Championship.

There was a lot of really good basketball being played, some of the games were much better than a lot of the professional ‘NBA’ games. These college kids played their hearts out, not for money, but for school pride, their pride for their individual collage. For seniors who played in this tournament, it was their last chance to play basketball because the chances of these kids actually being drafted into the NBA is extremely slim to none. There are just too many college teams and players for the NBA to choose from. As per ‘Google’ there are 336 Men’s College Basketball Teams in the United States and each team has up to 15 players signed on a that basketball team with only 12 dressed and ready to play in the games.

When you start with 336 teams at the beginning of the basketball season and only 64 teams actually make it to the March Madness competition, you can see how it should be only the best of the best that we see play.

But as expected there was a whole lot of upsets and a few of ‘to be expected’ this year. Most of the games were very exciting to watch. The hard part for us Sports fans on the West Coast, is that we don’t get to see a lot of the teams from the East Coast actually play basketball. We hear about some of the teams, such as Virginia, Villanova, Kansas, or even Xavier. These schools came into the playoffs ranked number one and yet most of us on the West Coast probably didn’t even see a single game of theirs, at least now and then we got to see some of their game highlights on Sports Center.

Due to not seeing all the team actually play, it was a little hard this year to fill out my Bracket and even with the fact that I had never even seen over half the teams play, I did it anyway. I based it on stats and on last year’s performances.

It was disappointing to see that USC didn’t even make it the party and that UCLA barely made it. It was, however, exciting to see Cal-State Fullerton and San Diego State make the list. Of course it was disappointing to see the three California team that did make it to March Madness did not do better. UCLA bit the dust first, with Cal-State and San Diego following suit. Oh well there is always next year.

I had picked Virginia to play Villanova with Villanova winning in the Championship game, and Virginia didn’t even get past the first round. That truly was an epic upset. At least while I was writing this Villanova was still in it, scheduled to play Kansas with the winning team playing the winner of the Loyola – Michigan Game.

This past off season was tough for most Dodger and Angel fans.

Lots of fans asking what happened to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim? It was indeed a difficult year for them, loaded with of key players getting injured and a bunch of rookies that just struggled from day one.

The Angels ended the 2017 season with 80 wins and 82 losses, they still managed to end up in second place, but it was not good enough to even make the playoffs.

First place in the AL West Division was held by the Houston Astros and as we well know, they went on to beat the LA Dodgers in the 2017 World Series. It would have been an epic World Series if the Angels took out Houston and ended up playing the Dodgers instead of Houston. So close and yet so far!

Speaking as a couch potato coach, it seems on paper the Dodgers should have easily beat the Houston Astros, however, personally I think Dave Roberts putting in Yu Darvish to pitch in the deciding game, when he had blown the game he pitched in just before that and then keeping him in the game for 2 inning was a huge mistake or was it just plain stupid.

That right, Darvish had already proven without a doubt that he was totally not capable of pitching for the Dodgers when he blew the third game of the series and allowed all those runs in the second inning, he allowed 4 runs before Roberts pulled him from that game.

Dave Roberts should have never let him pitch in the 7th game. The Dodgers and the Astros were tied at 3 games apiece not a good time to allow Darvish to pitch.  It wasn’t like Roberts did not have any other pitchers available.

Unfortunately for the Dodgers, Darvish once again allowed 2 runs in the first inning and 2 additional runs in the second inning before once again being yanked. That was in my opinion, once again plain stupid.

Both games were lost by Dave Roberts trust in Yu Darvish. The good news is that Darvish is gone from the Dodger lineup, he is now a Chicago Cubs.

The only problem I can see with this year’s Dodger team is that they are young and several of them are ‘rookies’. You can see their excitement as they get closer to the playoffs. They are playing well as a team now, and hopefully Dave Roberts can keep them playing this good as a team if and when their excitement gets the best of them.

The Dodgers haven’t won a World Series since 1988. That’s quite a dry spell for a team with the history that the Dodgers have. They are a winning franchise and are definitely not use to losing!

Here’s to our Los Angeles Dodgers and to them winning the World Series next month. I can’t wait to see how they do. It might all come down to them winning a playoff round against the Washington Nationals, which is also a very good team this year. I wrote a very similar blog to this last year and as I was writing this there had not been much change in the way the Dodgers were playing. A few of the names of the players have changed but the results were pretty much the same. However as I am continuing to write, the Dodgers have moved from 3rd place into 1st place at the close of May.

I know it’s only June, and there is still a lot of baseball left before the season ends, but as a Dodger fan it was hard to watch the way the team was playing in March and April. We complained about the lack luster dodgers under the management of Don Mattingly, so he gets replaced by Dave Roberts. However, with this being his second year with the Dodgers, I was really hoping for more from Dave Roberts and for the first couple of months it was really hard to watch him make the choices he made. But that was April; May has been a very good month for Roberts.

This past April’s performance was not up to what we have come to expect from our beloved Dodgers and there are still several problems that are so apparent even to us couch coaches. Some of the problems were with the younger player, the rookies’ just learning the game as a Dodger.

However, I am going to blame a lot of problems on the Dodgers older players not staying healthy, such as Ethier, Van Slyke, Turner, even Utley and Gonzalez have not been able to stay off the DL. The list for the Dodger pitchers that are on the DL is even longer.

Unfortunately some of these problems were the reasons the dodgers did not make it past the first round of the playoffs last year and well as the year before that.

The first and foremost problem is that the dodgers only have ONE solid pitcher by the name of Kershaw and even Kershaw is showing his age a bit. You might be able to win your division with one pitcher, the dodgers did exactly that last year, but with only one dependable pitcher, you are not getting past the first round of the playoffs. The Dodgers really need to find a way to keep the pitchers off the DL.

We have Maeda, who doesn’t have the strength to pitch past the 5th inning and the one time he does, he is immediately moved over to the DL list. Don’t even get me started on Ryu, 5 losses – only one win and he was a starter??

The Dodgers have at least improved their list of good relief pitchers, they haven’t blow has many leads this year, at least so far.

The Dodgers know that it takes more than a couple of good hitters and one or two good pitchers to get the Dodgers to the World Series, hopefully for the rest of the season the Dodgers will continue to pull it together. They will need to be on top of their game to knock the Rockies out of first place.

But what about Dave Roberts himself? Should I question his ability to do what is necessary to bring the team together? Some say yes, some say no. Roberts didn’t help his cause much either when during the Dodger game against the Rookies on May 11, he left Ryu in to pitch even when he allowed 10 runs. But he is definitely a better manager than Mattingly was and he does seems to be doing well with the rookies and that’s a good sign.

As the Dodgers closed out May the Dodgers are just a tad over 600 and in 1st place with a half game lead on the Rockies. The Dodgers’ rival, the Giants are in fourth leaving the Padres once again in last place.

The Dodgers finished the month of April with 14 wins and 12 losses. May started out a little better but not enough to overtake the Rockies with 19 wins and 9 losses.

The Dodgers need more than Kershaw, it’s unfair to expect him to carry the team to the playoffs especially after his last performance on May 28 when he had to be pulled out before he even completed the fifth inning .

It’s March again and you know what that means, it’s also March Madness again, March Madness 2017. I don?t know about other sport fans out there, but with the football season a done deal baseball is still over a month away from starting and neither the LA Lakers or Clippers have really given us much to cheer about, I can’t wait until March Madness begins!

2017 conference tournament for the PAC_12 is scheduled to run from March 8^th to the 11^th.

The 2017 Men’s NCAA March Madness Tournament Bracket matchups will be announced on Sunday, March 12th between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 P.M. EST.  And this is just the beginning.

The championship game will be the first contested in a Western state since 1995 when Seattle, Washington was the host of the Final Four for that year.

The pace is fast with 68 teams that start. Then we move on to 32 games played in just the span of a few days, then a couple of days off and then round two will start with 16 games.  This keeps going until there are only two teams left.

Even if you are not a fan of actually sitting down and filling out a bracket, you still can enjoy the
