Baseball Instant Replay
Hey baseball fans, the jury is still out on whether or not the use of ‘instant replay’ has really helped or hindered the ‘good old’ game of baseball.

There have been several occasions when the use of instant replay has changed the outcome of the game. The Umpires would take a second look at the call and the call would stand or be reversed.

However, on several occasions, not only did it slow down the game even more than normal for a game of baseball, but the Umpires still managed to get the call wrong.

There is also a downside to instant replay, one which the managers are in agreement, and that is that the managers should not have to be the ones who have to bring the request for a second look it to the attention of the Umpires. The Umpires should know from their past experiences that their call was a questionable one and request the second look themselves. At least for the obvious calls, this one change would and could speed up the instant replay, which at times has lasted several minutes. Each time-delay caused by the request by the managers for a second look at the umpire’s call is down time for the pitchers which can throw off their rhythm, or to the base runner left out there

Half the season is almost over and baseball will takes a few days off from their normal schedule for the best of the best to play in the ‘All Star Game’ which includes the famous ‘homerun derby’ .
This being the first year the use of instant replay is being used in baseball, now during this mid-season break, it would also be a good time for the MLB to take a second look at what has transpired in the first half. Has instant replay actually helped the game at all?

There are still the die-hard baseball fans that if left up to them would surely dump it. They would prefer to keep the game as pure as possible, these are the same fans that would also do away with the Designated Hitter, which was implemented in 1973, that the American League uses, but the National League does not.

Funny thing about instant replay, it was suppose to put an end to the ejections in the game. Usually players and their managers get ejected from the game because of Umpires really bad calls. However, despite instant replay, ejections are actually up this year
Umpires are quicker with the ejections and there is always the argument over strikes and balls, which is not included in instant replay and cannot be challenged by the plays or managers.

Although the jury is still out on whether ‘instant replay’ can be considered a success or not, there are still many in the MLB that think that instant replay needs to go even further.
The next logical step would be to take the calling of balls and strikes out of the umpire’s control. It has even been suggested that baseball use the same technology that they used in tennis to call the balls out of bounds. Who knows if that would work or not but it does make for some very interesting conversations.
